Driving an NYC Yellow cab is an excellent way to earn money. At the end of every shift, even when a fare pays with a credit card – you go home with cash in your hand!
Getting your NYC TLC yellow cab licenses is not difficult. From start to finish, there are five procedures that average one month to complete and $500 in fees. If you are ambitious, the five steps can be completed with in a two week time period.
If you are a full-time university student, willing to work through the summer or on a regular part-time basis, you might qualify for an loan! Contact Mike K from Tuesday through Saturday (9am – 6pm) for more information 718-786-0640.
Now let’s start with the check list of requirements you need to know before getting your license. First, you must be 19 or older and follow five simple procedures to get your license.
Step 1 – Preparing your documents.
Step 2 – Getting ready to apply.
Step 3 – Submitting paperwork to the TLC.
Step 4 – Taxi school.
Step 5 – Taking the NYC TLC yellow cab test.
STEP 1 – PREPARING YOUR DOCUMENTS.
You will need the following documents
1. Print out the three following TLC forms (Medical Certification Form, Child Support Certification, TLC Application)
2. Proof of Citizenship / Residency (Passport, Birth Certificate, Green Card, Work Permit)
3. Original Social Security Card
4. NYS DMV License – A, B, C or E Class. The TLC requires that all applicants owe no outstanding obligations to the DMV, NYC PVB, or NYC TLC. If you have a NYS license, the TLC will check this at the time that you file your application. If you have a New Jersey or Connecticut chauffeurs license equivalent, you will need a printed certified driving history. You will also need to obtain a certified document from your DMV stating that you do not owe them any money. This document must not be more than 30 days old.
5. Photo ID (Your DMV License fulfills this requirement).
6. Proof of Address – a utility, phone, credit card bill, or bank statement with your current address on it.
7. If you were arrested, a copy of your court disposition.
8. Payment receipt or cancelled check stating payments for PVB, DMV, or TLC summonses. Pay off all tickets before applying!
9. Visit your local United States Post Office and get three money orders for THREE different amounts – $60 (payable to NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission), $75 (payable to NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission), $25.50 (payable to Lab Corp).
STEP 2 – GETTING READY TO APPLY.
1. Get a medial exam (pdf approved form). The Metropolitan Taxi Cab Board of Trade recommends the following two medial offices.
Dr. Kiyoon Yoon ($15.00)
Monday – Friday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm
40-37 74 Street, Elmhurst, NY

2. Take a defensive driving course BEFORE applying to the TLC. The TLC requires you take a class at an approved school. Team offers a free TLC approved class and you will need to call the garage 718-786-0640 to sechedule the next session. Alternatively, you can attend at one of the following following taxi schools.

STEP 3 – SUBMITTING PAPERWORK TO THE TLC.
Due to an increase in applications, it is recommend to visit the TLC Long Island City office in the morning. Submitting paperwork and fingerprinting is known to take up to 4 hours. Plan accordingly. The Staten Island office is open only through appointments.

2. Bring your Medical Certification Form, Child Support Certification, TLC Application, defensive driving form, and your three money orders.
3. While at the TLC you will stand in a line and all of your paper work will be verified and you will have number assigned to you. Next, you will wait to see a processing agent to submit your application. Then you will be photographed and fingerprinted.4. Once you are done with the TLC it is recommend to walk a few block to LabCorp (31-00 47th Avenue, Long Island City) and take your drug test. The office is open Monday – Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. You will need a money order for $25.50 (payable to LabCorp) and your TLC “blue” receipt. Failing the drug test results in an automatic denial of your application.
STEP 4 – TAXI SCHOOL.
Once your paperwork is submitted to the TLC, you will be supplied with a “blue” receipt which contains your application number. You need this number to take taxi school. Every taxicab driver applicant must attend an approved taxi school for either the 80-hour or the 24-hour course. Taking the 80-hour course increases your chances of passing the taxi exam. If you know New York City geography, the 24-hour course may be a better option for you. Applicants must contact the taxi school directly to register for the course. You must submit your application before attending Taxi School, and you must bring your TLC receipt to enroll.
Payment is made directly to the schools and range in cost – $325 for the 80-hour course and $125 for the 24-hour course. In addition to this cost, applicants must pay $25 for each reserved date of testing to take the taxi and English proficiency test.
Note that every Thursday night, MasterCabbie offers a practice test for $25.00. Contact them for more information. Also note, you can only take the TLC yellow cab test at the taxi school where you attended the 24 or 80 course.
For taxi school scheduling options, contact the schools directly:

STEP 5 – TAKING THE TLC YELLOW CAB TEST.
As noted above, MasterCabbie offers a practice test every Thursday night for $25.00. Contact them for more information.
The TLC yellow cab test is a tightly regulated 6 hour test covering english proficiency, NYC geography and TLC rules and regulations. Distributed every Friday starting at 9:00 am, most applicants complete the test before 1:00 pm or 2:00 pm. You MUST take the test at the same location where you took your taxi school and most schools require you to register for the test before 5:00 pm the Tuesday before the test.
The test is broken out into two parts and operates as two separate tests – an english proficiency test and NYC geography / TLC rules and regulations test. You must past both to get your licensee, and you only have TWO attempts to pass. Should you fail to pass, you will be required to restart the application process. Consequently, once you have past one part, you no longer need to take that test again.
Most test takers who are proficient in english will not have a problem with the english portion. The NYC geography / TLC rules and regulations test is based on information you received in class and features an open map book portion. The test is designed to verify that you have an understanding of NYC geography, know how to read a map and are competent on the TLC rules. On the TLC web site you will find a list of informational guides and a sample test.
On the Wednesday after the test, the TLC notifies taxi schools of test results. If you have completed all of your paperwork, you should receive your TLC yellow cab licensee within two weeks.
On march 2008 I applied for hack lisence and my drug test was positive and T&LC denied my application. On june 2008, again I applied for hack lisence and i passed drug test and the written test but they didn’t give me the lisence.
After three months they send me a letter to go for a hearing of drug test filed on my 1st application.I went to the hearing and Iexplained everything to the judge that that time I was sick and I was taking over the counter madicine but I don’t have the prescription because that was a minor cold so Idin’t go to doctor and i bought the madicine directly from the pharmacy. After that I got the judges decision letter he recomended that I should get my lisence. After few days I got a letter from the T&LC commissioner that he is not agree with the judge and my application is denied. Now what should I do? If I apply againis there any guarantee that i will get the lisence. Or after how long I should apply for the lisence? May be T&LC not gonna give me the lisence within a period of time and what is that period of time? If anyone knows the answer or wanna give any suggestion please help me. My email address is enclosed. Thank You
First you could write or request to conference with an administrator or the commissioner of TLC to have clarification as to why you have been denied, using record from the Judges’s decision. You can also ask to be re-tested for drug again given the lengh speak to a lawyer near you.
i am trying to go back to school and i feel working as a cab man is the best work as a student because i can control my hour but i really do not know where or how to start the license procedure pls adv

I would to apply for this job.
I was wondering about the background check. I have a felony from 2005. Will my criminal record prevent me from getting a hack license?
I live in Cleveland, Ohio. I have a very passionate love for New York City. Does me being 8 hours away kill my chances of becoming a taxi driver in NYC?
No But Driving a CAB May…..Kill You…Kidding ….You Need to Move Here and BECOME FAMILIAR With NYC and Learn To Drive With a lot of Restrictions / rules….Must Pass TLC Test…So….What Do You do There ?…..
best job in new york my dream drive yellow cab in usa
Does a 8 year old DUI prevent you from obtaining a hack license?
On december 6 2014 i received a letter which stated that i did not complete my paperwork within the 3 month period but in reality i’ve completed all within 1 month. My application is cancelled for no liable reason.
I live in Yonkers and drive a taxi here for a car service. I would like to drive a NYC yellow cab because they make more money. Do you think commuting from Westchester to the garages in Queens is a problem
JonBoy
Definitely you should do it. I commute from an even further location. The NYC taxi business has been very good to me for many years.
Night Driver or Anyone; Do all drivers drive for 12 hour shifts? Anyone do less like 8 hours. In Yonkers I drive 4 to midnight, I’m thinking about traveling time from my house to the garages in Queens. Leaves little time for sleep π
I guess another option is to not drive every day? Do the garages care if you drive daily or only 4 days a week? Should I drive my personal car from Yonkers to the garage or take the train? I’m just curious what most people do.
Can you recommend a garage that will work with a newly licensed Hack?
Thank you so much!
JonBoy, wouldn’t recommend less than an 11 hour shift. Most garages want you to buy weekly but there are exceptions. It may be different now, since the fleets are under pressure from the app bs. I don’t think being newly licensed is ever an issue Don’t know much about parking in Queens but it’s doubtful a fleet garage is going to let you use their space. Seems like you should be taking the train if possible. Good luck.
There’s a thing on 31st St off N Boulevard seems like it could be a garage/ parking lot hybrid. Usually see both taxis and passenger cars.
When you’re young, you could drive 12 hours, but for how long? Pollution, daily stress, annoying taxi-TV and rude passengers who are always in a hurry, and blaming you about your slow and careful driving, and want you to get them there in a minute. That’s why many drivers getting tickets and that also builds more stress. Longer working hours may guarantee more money, but with all additional stresses does more damage to driver’s health. Cabdrivers should have liveable wages with eight hours of work. In 2015, we are working on it with all cabbies how accomplish that! If you don’t care, then just let other drivers take your business away with their luxurious unpartitioned hybrid cars!
JonBoy why travel to queens when you can work with a bronx garage or a Harlem garage ? and less than 10-11 hours of work won’t get you enough money, also don’t worry about new license or a few days of work garages are desperate for drivers these days because of uber and gett.
for Jim yes that’s my garage on 31st street and N Blvd, it’s called team systems, I don’t recommend it because of lot’s bad cars high mileage and non hybrid cars, they only have a few camrys some of them are non hybrid and a few nissan nv200 , the rest is just crown vics and transit connects, old drivers get the best cars and we get the shitiest ones and I do travel from Jersey city to that garage FYI, little time for sleep indeed
Pissed Off Cabbie: That’s interesting, I never even considered the Bronx. Any garages in the Bronx in particular that you know of? I’m assume they are somewhere around 138 st bridge.
You live in Jersey City? So that’s as bad as me in Yonkers! Do you drive to your garage or take the Path train in? Geez a 12 hour shift and tack on another 90 minutes commuting is a long freaking day. You have to take home at least 300 to make it worth it
yeah bronx is your best option, Gotham garage is near 138th st bridge, right off Deegan it’s the only garage I am aware of in the Bronx , it’s on 75 Canal Street West , ( canal W. and 138th st).
Yes I take the path to 33th st and then the N or Q trains to queens, it takes 40 min during the day, but at night it takes around 1.5-2 hours to get home. driving is even worse with Holland tolls and traffic on the BQE, I know it’s fu**d up, but I only work 3-4 days/week sometime less, it depends on how busy it is .
Just search “nyc taxi fleets” and you will see all the places you can find work as a taxi driver.
Lot of rules
What ever happened to Tony Fox?
He’s fighting the forces of evil @uberpeople.com
Thanks for The Concern…….
Ha! there he is.. why so quiet lately?
Does anyone know if out of state convictions show up, and how far back they check the criminal history? I have a felony drug conviction from 22 years ago, but nothing since.
Hmm.. I can see it coming up but I don’t know if they’ll bust your chops or not.
Thanks. I also read that I need to bring in the court disposition on the charge, but I’m having a hell of a time trying to find out how to get it.
Oh yea.. completely thought I mentioned that.. wow I thought I typed way more.. yea you need a court disposition. Go to the court where you received the charges and they’ll probably have it somewhere. I was arrested once(misdemeanor.. such a bullshit case that was dropped) and the TLC actually made me wait until I handed in my paper work to go on with getting my license. I knew someone who had a DUI on his record and I don’t remember the process he went thru but I think he had to hand in his disposition papers and then request and plead with the TLC(I think he went to TLC court or whatever) and had to ask for them to look past it. But then again I think he was in a situation where he just slept in his car and they hit him with it. I don’t know how they’d handle a felony but if it was over 20+ years ago I don’t think they’d hold it over your head now. Don’t take my word for it though this is NYC you’re dealing with and their employees don’t give a crap. Your best bet is to ask a lawyer who’s familiar with TLC stuff.. one that comes up to my mind is Michael Spevack but he usually works with traffic tickets but he may be familiar with this stuff.. you can probably visit the taxi insider newspaper(Dave Pollack) for more info too..
I am looking to work/ drive yellow cab. I need some information
abut processing and starting
Getachew, to start – visit TLC NYC website, click on Licensing,
new yellow cab (medallion) license. It gives you detailed info on
how to become licensed cab driver.
I will try to sum it up briefly –
You will need a Class E DMV license from local DMV, Easy.
DMV just takes your regular DMV license and upgrades it to
class E at the spot (fees involved).
You can apply for new TLC yellow cab license online.
Print receipt once you apply. Keep it.
You will need a vision test done (any MD does it in 5 minutes).
A defensive driving class certificate (you may have it already,
renew if old)
Sign up for a taxicab class. List of schools is on TLC website.
Finish the class (4-5 days). Pass exam.
Also drug-test. TLC lists lab locations.
That should be about it. I may miss couple of minor things here or there.
Takes a couple of months or so. Get your license in
mail, start driving, give yourself some room and relax – as in
any professional occupation – you will get better and earn more
as time passes by. Pros in this business are making good money.
Best deal in NYC!!!!
Seen a driver post a deal at the avenue M garage about a $35 rate with a 30% commission… Is it just me or does it sound like that deals pretty bad?
$110 for a $250 day plus it looks like additional fees, plus you have to drive in from pretty far out in Brooklyn. You might save a couple bucks. Maybe you save more if it applies to night rate I only know day rates.
Oh and from what the driver said its capped at the TLC cap limits so let’s say you make $400….. It would be capped at the most the garage can charge for that day.
That’s true too. You make $400 often? Ever?
Yeah I guess it’s on the gross huh I’m not used to thinking that way. You’ll hit the cap every time.
Better off finding a good weekly rate where you use the same car.
I think for new drivers maybe not bad. Looks to me this ad working ok till you hit $250.
What’s Goldman Sachs plan with all this money being raised for Uber? why are they trying to so hard for them?
A global monopoly on transportation. With self driving cars.
That $35 deal is a great idea…. It brings us back to the days of commission rates in the 1970’s. If you didn’t feel well you could call it a night and still take home 49%. It takes the pressure off.
This could be a beginning of getting many of the drivers back where they belong, in the real taxis, not the UBER bullshit swindle.
Uber banned in Columbus, Oh. 5th largest city. Nice. I love ya Family. The real meter peter.
EU policy chief: “Uber must respect law”. TLC must act and stop self-justifying Uber’s criminal enterprise.
BAN UBER in NYC !!
So they’ve officially suspended 5 out of 6 bases.
The tlc is a joke.
Brooklyn, if you listen to Joshi’s comments from the City Council meeting, she says that what the TLC has done is instituted new rules that trip data has to be turned over at set intervals (every 3 months?). If they don’t, the bases now get fined. One of the council members suggested raising the fine to $1000, and Joshi’s reaction was basically ‘thank you’ so she’s for it. It looks to me that what they’re doing is putting the pressure on bases for it to not be worth their while to deal with Uber if Uber won’t play by the rules. but who knows, U just got another 1.6 billion to pass out to cover fines and $1000 irrelevant to them.
Other base would be SHUT DOWN, but Uber criminals – noooo…
What gives, TLC ??
If Uber (according to them) operates the same with one base, what exactly was the reason for having five? Show?
Probably just more opportunity to pass out bribes and recruit drivers.
I could see it as the TLC putting pressure on them. Don’t sleep on the TLC they’re probably hearing crap from both sides. When’s the last time you ever saw an appeal process go thru that fast? 2 weeks? Knowing the city it usually lasts a minimum 2 months.
Cuomo Wants Elevated Train Link Built to
Served La Guardia Airport. Where are they going to find the money for that project? Uber gonna have to pay sometime
Oh great and they want a train to Newark
They should build the damn 2nd ave train station.
Uber released (was forced to) it’s US data. $16,000 per year per driver (just straight dividing paid trips w/ driver number). But wait, I thought they made $100,000? Amazing.
Lol reading further the number most likely doesn’t factor in gas expenses car depreciation. It’s all smoke and mirrors.
That’s only part of why they didn’t want the records released.
Uber preparing its data is like Madoff auditing himself. “Trust me! I really am that amazing!”
Jim there’s alot of inactive drivers too so I don’t know if you can consider that but either way a lot of drivers don’t make the money they’re advertising no matter what. Lol a Uber driver actually told me he wishes Uber capped the amount of drivers which were allowed to be logged in at one time. Medallion system? lol. I can just see it now… drivers having to wait around hoping they can click “log in” the second a space opens up. I think this may be the beginning of the rise of the medallion soon once again. I think Meter Peter will soon be able to RELAX lol. Although we’re not out of the woods yet and there’s a huge battle left to fight.. I think the medallion is showing signs of life.
I have a question… WHERE THE HELL IS MS. DESAI? she used to be in the news all the time. She’s been pretty quiet for a while now.. I guess after that little slush fund she had going got cut off and Bloomberg had no need for her anymore she’s disappeared into obscurity
If you think uber nothin new. Just same radio group nothing else’s. Pump and dump.
Desai’s been doing things check their twitter page. I must be one of the few who thinks the disability fund was a very good thing. Shame it was blocked.
I say All This Stuff I see on TV and Internet Capping UBERTHIEVES Prices …..IS DEAD WRONG …….
No CAP For UBER THIEVES PERIOD ………
Are YOU INSANE ……???….
THE Idea Someone EVEN Considers Capping Uber Prices MEANS They ARE CONSIDERING an OUTLAW APP to BE MADE LEGAL ANY MINUTE …..
Capping Them Is Saying ITS OK To COME INTO an INDUSTRY That Has Developed and Nurtured Itself For MANY Years ….
Black Cars PROVIDE The Uber UPSCALE Service LEGALLY……..They HAVE LEGAL BASES and HUGE Overhead/Fees
Taxis Work and Services The ENTIRE City…….Legally…FEES Paid…..DONT ASK…..HUGE FEES…..
Local Car / Green Car Services Provide to OUTER BORO Areas LEGALLY
Because Mass Transit and Other Factors UBER has Grown and WAS Able to SURGE/SCREW The General PUBLIC…Which Is NOW Wanting a CAP……?…..Silly Folks You are Kidding Right?……They Screwed You….Get BACK to the BLACK CARS !!!!….Go in The Street Wait 3 MINUTES for a Yellow / Green Cab !!!!……NO CAP FOR UBERTHIEVES ….OUT with UBER

Brooklyn, NYTWA meeting on 2/4/15 @ 2pm. Open discussion with DOT, Merra Joshi and Desai.
Uber is a CRIMINAL enterprise that must be stopped.
How anyone can think the health fund was a good thing is beyond me. Get your own insurance. One that pays for something. Just add a surcharge for anything anytime. You couldn’t get an asprin or penicillin tab with that plan. We already have work comp.
I just need a plan that covers peptobismol and xanax.
Because for one thing it provided actual money in your hand for six months if you couldn’t work. I don’t know of many people who have ever had Worker’s Comp kick in driving a cab, do you?
I once had workmans comp pay a bill for a finger tendon I broke when I hit the meter button. That was over 20 years ago.
Ok, that’s one. 20 years ago. Anyone else?
A symphony of crickets.
Uber had to admit it’s a taxi service and apply for a taxi license to get back into India….
So now they admitted their a taxi service in India does that mean their a taxi service in the US of A or are they still a criminal internet company?
Naah, they’re only a taxi in in India. Because India has ‘special rules’ as to what defines a taxi. Or something. La la la . But Cali did just rule app drivers need to carry commercial plates (commercial insurance)……
Slowly apps are being regulated across the US and around the world. I see the value of my family medallion is down about 40% from the high and I don’t see any recovery sight. Its depressing! Owning a medallion use mean something. The TLC is a bunch of fug ups.
I can’t see anyone wanting be a tlc chairman, to much work and aggravation and not enough pay.
Was watching the latest NYTWA video and Desai brought up how Bloomberg intentionally didn’t fill a certain position at the TLC so there was no way to go after the garages for overcharges. Don’t remember how it eventually got filled. Had forgotten about that. I think she’s done some good.
NYTWA is a good organization. Way back before them was UTOG (united taxi owners guild)
great site who ever thought an unregulated enity as uber would price gouge im shocked cab drivers thats who people
Uber is in control of the TLC. Waiting to see outcome of traffic study and expect some cap is futile.
new licenses allow drivers to easily switch between black and yellow.www.amny.com/transit/yellow-taxis-launch-1-million-campaign-to-lure-back-drivers-passengers-from-uber-lyft-1.11228657

Livery 2 years driver or black car license TLc. requires to no test yellow cab. It’s true? Some one please let me know.
TLC has been paid to feed the beast. Commission votes in January..nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-nix-probationary-licenses-rookie-cabbies-article-1.2475499
Livery 2 years driver or black car license TLc. requires to no test yellow cab. Itβs true? Some one please let me know.
Yes, it’s true
Do the uber drivers have to take the WCA course?
WCA course is mandatory for ALL renewal applicants – taxi, uber, limo, livery.
New TLC license applicants are also required to take WCA course.
I hear owner drivers are not paying the .50 cents mta surcharge.
Fleets too
I think mta surcharge should go away but until it isn’t officially removed tlc will go after each case of non-payment + penalties. This has been tried before and to my knowledge never worked well.
Uber can charge what they want. Drivers should forget to turn on the meter and let the customers pay what they think the ride is worth.
someone can please give an idea for new TLC exam ( not a yellow cab ).
thank you.

How long after a DWAI (.06) can you apply for a TLC license? Different people have said 12-18 months, any thoughts ?
You can reapply for the tlc license after 1 year, but they will take your money and deny you everyone. Once you are arrested you are banned for life from tlc.
