Taxi king Evgeny Freidman was evicted from his space for not paying rent

Evgeny “Gene” Freidman is the man who BusinessWeek called “The Taxi King” and is the owner and operator of the largest Taxi fleet in New York City. But his kingdom has recently begun to fall.

According to court documents, in the morning on August 24, 2016, City Marshals evicted Taxi Club Management, one of Freidman’s Taxi companies, from its commercial space on 10th Avenue as they owed more than $77,000 in rent to the landlord.

The monthly rent for the space was $15,265 and according to reports, Freidman failed to pay between October 2015 and February 2016. The landlord, Pradera Realty, sued Freidman’s company in January. The attorney for Pradera Realty commented that the rent owed is actually even larger when you calculate in the missed rent between the time they sued and when he was finally evicted in August 2016.

When contacted by the media, Freidman denied any eviction and declined to be interviewed. Freidman simply stated, “I told you I don’t comment. God bless you, bye.”

Freidman told a judge that he stopped making rent payments after a multitude of problems such as basement flooding, rat infestation and power problems. The attorney for Pradera Realty strongly denied the complaints about the property and instead believed that he either didn’t have the money or didn’t want to pay it.

The judge rejected that defense as it would only apply to residential properties and not commercial space.

Freidman is due back in court in October 2016 and will most likely have a new attorney. Martin Tenenbaum filed a motion on August 19, 2016 to be removed as Freidman’s counsel as Freidman’s cooperation in his legal affairs recently stopped and there was a “complete breakdown of the attorney-client relationship.”

He had no respect to drivers ,he would swallow drivers deposit on cars that drivers buy from him ,he would file false insurance claims on scratched bumpers and charge both drivers and insurance a lot .Taxi industry ruined by these people .he got the money illegally to buy 900 medallions .you can’t use loans to buy medallions because you didn’t drive or made money from driving to buy those medallions.we don’t know how those banks make money and they have no direct intervention on taxi business.Prostition ,drugs ,black market money are stocked in those banks and they want to hijack the taxi industry by hiring indirectly these people get as 900 medallions each so he and his banks get easy money from drivers as low as 900$ times 1680$ or 1,512,000 a week .
    this is called corruption .
only drivers have the right to buy medallions and 50% deposit in cash .then you can say to a person welcome to taxi business.it’s impossible for drivers to buy medallions because of these ghost bank loans.

  2. FairShare on September 10, 2016 at 7:04 pm said:

He never owned 900 medallions. He leased most of them. At least with NYC taxi you can buy and own your own medallion, with Uber – you can never buy or own anything – with Uber you’re on a forever rent – unable to become an owner. Once you run the numbers – Uber is a waste of time.

There is no difference when comparing Friedman to uber, both corrupt corporations, hiding money, not paying taxes, paying off politicians and screwing over drivers.

Why by a medallion when uber is all you can afford?

  6. Anonymous on September 12, 2016 at 9:37 am said:

I drive yellow not uber. I predicted 250k for the medallion last year when uber was expanding like crazy. I can afford a medallion and probably will buy one when they drop a little more. Forclousures are going up every month and basically no financing available means medallion is going lower and lower . I’m just waiting patiently for it to hit the bottom

Traffic is getting very bad. NYC traffic was bad enough but with all the app taxis its now impossible. Uber says they create jobs but the truth is uber is creating forclosures and bankruptcy. Owner drivers who took loans on their houses and paid a million are losing everything. Drivers retirement ruined as well. Uber is a disruptor destroyer. City Madoff(ed) the medallion owners.

Has there been a real sale for under $500,000? I don’t see anyone who has that kind of money using it for a medallion. So who would finance $500? Montauk!

Sad how thousands of medallion owners lost what they worked years for. City officials should be made to pay for accepting bribes and changing the rules. The TLC has thrown out almost every rule to keep pace with uber who has none.

TLC website has 1 transfer in August for 350k, there are a few others listed higher and several forclousures , doesn’t that mean it sold for 350k?

Medallions lead us to corruption,Because Gangs get them without working 12 hours 7days 30 years of work.what a stupidity to sell medallions to a gambler or to a bank .Banks don’t work..when you see banks come in trading your job just get out and find something else. For Example:Uber would not open a door for any bank to come onboard ..because it’s using job money for improvements and helping drivers get more money .that why you see cabies look sick tired overworked because of auctioning these medallions to the limit without taking into account traffic ,hours holidays, summer ,snow, and so on..If you drive a cab ,you are dead brain because you paying everyone in this world..bank intrests, owner fees, taxes, tlc fees,
maintenance ,tickets, traffic time lost ,slow days, lease auctionned ,your health, ..at the end you make 60$ a day if lucky ..jesus cris..Ignorance feeds Capitalism…

I remember when I bought my medallion I had to show where I got the money for the down payment and was completely vetted. When I told them my mother helped out mom had to bring her bank book and get fingerprinted. Mom was totally checked out because she helped me out. Didn’t own a piece of the medallion just took money from her savings for me. I had to bring her to Queens to get “booked”.

If medallion taxis are the only one allowed to pick up street hails why isn’t the hail allowed to use technology? And if yellows are using an app to pick up then they should be the only one allowed. Uber app is a street hail like Curb. If we aren’t allowed to pick up pre-arranged passengers then Curb is a street hail.

Imagine an app providing banking services – in violation of FDIC, laws, regulations. Would banks shut up? And when banks would says this is illegal, unfair, and unconstitutional – the app owners would call them ‘Luddites’, ‘degenerates’, ‘banks stink’, ‘our app smells better’, and etc. Would this fly in US judicial system? Not in a million years. This law-breaking app would be shut down in a day. But do that to millions of taxi drivers and our judges take the dark corporate side.
