A Turkish car company claims to be the front-runner in the city’s competition to design the Taxi of Tomorrow.
Officials at Karsan, who recently unveiled its WiFi-enabled, compressed-fuel prototype, told a Turkish newspaper they expect to be declared the winner when city officials make their official announcement by year’s end.
“We have produced the only model that fully conforms to the requirements set forth by the mayor,” said company exec Jean Nahu.
But Taxi and Limousine Commissioner David Yassky called the process far from over and said there were no front-runners.
A Turkish firm says its design is ahead of the pack to update the Big Apple’s taxi fleet.
In fact, he said, the winner, which will be on the streets by 2014, may not even look like the original designs.
“I think more likely than not, we’ll go back and ask people for a revised proposal,” he said.
Soon, Yassky will ask the public to say what perks they’d like to see in the new cabs.
