A New York City taxi driver returned up to $100,000 worth of jewelry and cash a socialite left in the back seat of his cab.
John James forgot the white bag with the valuables after being dropped off at the National Arts Club in Gramercy where he lives.
Zubiru Jalloh says, “I had another fare and when I opened the back door to help the customer, I realized the white bag was inside.”
“I saw inside, pictures and jewelry and some money, $229, some paperwork and some artwork,” Jalloh told Fox 5.
He says he took the bag home because he had to pick up his child because his wife was in the hospital.
Jalloh was confident that the customer would contact him because he had given him a receipt. They reunited on Monday.
“He was so happy. Very, very happy. And he was so humble and he looked like he wanted to cry,” Jalloh.
He says that James offered him a reward but he declined initially declined because it is his responsibility as a taxi driver to return lost personal items. Jalloh said that he eventually accepted $1,000, when he was convinced that it was a gift from the heart.
James’ twin brother, O. Aldon James, is the president of the arts club, whose members include Uma Thurman and Robert Redford.
